Challenges facing technology leaders in the B to B World!
A significant challenge facing business leaders in technology companies is the rapid change in the expectations of customers and employees. Traditional business models are quickly becoming outmoded and need to change to catch up this new paradigm.
Consumerization of IT has trained traditional B to B (Business to Business) customers to expect more immediacy than they have in the past. It's necessitating business leaders to rethink their communication models from traditional print media and web sites to more interactive models. Order fulfillment, shipping processes, billing and other back office functions, need to transform to stay in favour with customers.
While preaching 'customer service,' and 'experience' are great tag lines, … marketplaces are fundamentally eroding the bottom line of larger companies; businesses leaders must be aware of new marketplaces that are vertically integrating services that traditionally were untouched.
Many progressive businesses are having remote employees. This follows the trend toward telecommuting, virtual meetings, new compensation models, and hiring contractors over employees. Leaders need to learn how to manage the changing workspace and have their management team trained for this new environment and learn how to manage virtual team members.
Another challenge in this new paradigm, is that traditional businesses can get caught with too much overhead in fixed costs such as leases on offices and equipment. New competitors are coming into the market that minimize fixed overhead. They use short term contracts and access to low cost financing to bring out disruptive products and services.
