Project management was popularized initially in construction and building. In these industries, the knowledge work is done in clear phases prior to the execution, largely because the cost of changes in construction is huge! Make a mistake with the location of an elevator shaft or foundation piling and the costs to fix it are exorbitant!

But applying projects to all other kinds of knowledge work has been difficult. Software development, marketing, and other pure or primarily knowledge work efforts present some challenges.

What do we do to handle the inherent volatility, uncertainty, complexity, and ambiguity in these types of knowledge work efforts? What patterns have proven successful?
