1:15 PM – 2:00 PM | The Road to Exit: Financial Priorities for Business Owners
The Road to Exit: Financial Priorities for Business Owners
Speaker: Dave O'Brien, Sapling Financial
Drawing on experience working on both sides of the transaction, this session will explore the financial priorities business owners should address well before going to market. We’ll discuss why clean, reliable financial records matter, the areas that most frequently raise questions during due diligence, and how owners can proactively address issues that may otherwise impact value or derail a transaction.
Key topics will include:
- Cleaning up the books: Why accurate, consistent, and well-supported financial statements are foundational to a successful transaction.
- Cash-to-accrual and deferred revenue: Understanding how accounting methods and revenue recognition can affect reported results and transaction value.
- Normalized Working Capital: Why optimizing working capital today, can result in more cash in your pocket down the road
- Due diligence red flags: Common financial and accounting issues that can create concern for buyers and lead to additional scrutiny, negotiation, or adjustments.
- Value drivers: The financial characteristics that can influence valuation for mid-market companies and how owners can position their businesses accordingly.
- Defensible add-backs: What makes an adjustment credible and supportable—and why aggressive or poorly documented add-backs can undermine buyer confidence.
- Bankable balance sheets: The importance of presenting a balance sheet that accurately reflects the financial health of the business and stands up to lender and buyer scrutiny.
Whether an exit is two years away or already on the horizon, business owners can benefit from understanding how buyers will view their financials. The goal of this session is to provide a practical roadmap for identifying and addressing financial issues early, strengthening the business’s financial story, and putting owners in a better position when the time comes to transact.

Building the Team That Can Carry Your Business Through an Exit
Speaker: Shannon Johnston, Co-Owner and Integrator, OpsLab Inc.
As you prepare to scale, step back, or exit, having the right people in the right seats becomes critical. It’s not enough to have great people. You need clear accountability, the right leadership structure, and meaningful data that shows whether the business and each function within it is performing without everything flowing through you.
In this practical session, Shannon Johnston, Co-Founder and Integrator at OpsLab, will take a deeper dive into the People and Data and the tools you can use to build a team capable of carrying the business forward.
You will learn how to:
- Build an Accountability Chart around the business you’re becoming, not just the business you have today
- Use GWC™ (Gets It, Wants It, Capacity to Do It) to determine whether you truly have the right people in the right seats
- Create clear ownership and measurable expectations for the critical functions of your business
- Use data to know whether your people and departments are delivering the results the business needs
- Identify the accountabilities that still depend on you and begin building a succession plan to transfer them
If you’re planning to grow, step back, or eventually exit, this session will help you build the people, accountability, and leadership structure needed to confidently hand the business forward.

Getting to the Right People in the Sales Process
Speaker: Adam Fox, Executive Sales Director
Every entrepreneur, every owner, every sales leader knows the frustration: you have a great product or service, you’ve done your research, and you know exactly who you want to reach - but you can’t seem to break through. Often they approach the sales process backwards. They focus on getting in the door when they should be focused on building trust long before they ever knock.
In this session, Adam Fox shares the strategies that have driven consistent growth at one of Canada’s most recognized enterprise technology companies - practical approaches to social selling, building authentic relationships, and identifying and nurturing champions inside the organizations you want to work with.
The buying journey for organizations has changed dramatically over the last few years. The use of AI, designated social selling tools, building community to create momentum and supporting your internal champions as they become your strongest advocates are now more important than ever.
Whether you have a small lean sales team, or lead multi-layered inside, outside and digital pursuit teams, you’ll walk away with insights for warming up the right relationships - so when it’s time to have the conversation, you’re already a trusted voice in the room.
